Projects 2012

RATA Calendar and information for 2012 projects.

APRIL- In the second week of the school holidays we will hold our annual training for RATA teams and  our dinner to share our work with all those that we can encourage to come along. The dates are to be confirmed but it is likely to be April 16-17th

June 29th to July 15th  - INDIA (exact dates to be confirmed)

This year we go in the mango season!!! and it will be hot. We will hopefully will be able to send a large team so we can buddy one RATA teacher up with each of the 7 schools we work with. This year we will continue to entrench the teaching we have already given in numeracy, literacy, integrating the curriculum, classroom behavior, and phonics. Hopefully we also will have a strong leadership focus as we work beside the leaders of the seven schools. After spending five days at the Torchbearer Center delivering training we will try and split the team up into spending time in each of the schools we can access, to model what we have been teaching, and to mentor the teachers we have been working beside. As always- the Taj, Delhi and the amazing food of India will be up for grabs. Just also a word of encouragement in our previous visits no RATA teacher has ever got Delhi Belly- in fact eating the local food has been a real highlight. Approximate cost will be $4000.00

September 24th to October 14 (Approx)  - GHANA and TANZANIA

Approximate cost of $4800.00.  We will run dual projects, one team to Ghana and another to Tanzania.

The GHANA team will work ONLY with RATA International School as we try and really lift the teachers skill and knowledge in educational thinking and delivery. We would like a NZ RATA teacher in every class for at least a full week and if possible we will take the RATA International Teachers away for a retreat to the Volga region. We will follow this up with a Teachers Only Day where the other two schools who have been in the project will join us. A real focus in 2012 will be how the schools are using the books in their new libraries from the "Books in Ghana" project. We will visit local sites and the amazing Ashiaman market, where you can buy the famous Ghanian fabric and watch a few live crabs at the same time.

The TANZANIA team will go first to Nairobi and then travel to Arusha in Tanzania to be given some local cultural training by the Joshua Foundation staff. This will include a visit to Arusha school which is very inspirational. We will then go to Magugu and hope that on the long bus ride, we don't collide with a giraffe. We will spend at least five days in the school, with the students on site and a couple of days as Teacher Only Days. This is a remote, hot and difficult place to work, but the people are stunning and the heart they have for the children is amazing- and you should hear them sing. A great foundation has been laid in this school and the request is for us to do a "literacy blitz". We will endeavor to build in a three day safari at either Serengeti or Tarangire.

PROJECTS FOR 2013

In 2013 we plan to return to India in July to run a large teacher training conference at The Torchbearer Center. We are hoping to train up to 80 teachers for over an intensive week. This will be backed up by visits to the schools in the local vicinity. The will be our fourth year in India.

In October we will return to Ghana for our fifth year, and possibly continue in Tanzania. We also maybe sending a team back to CapeTown to help in the creche at The Ark, and we have heard a whisper about a project in Uganda as well.

If you wish to join us on any of these trips please contact me on ratasupport@gmail.com

COUNTRIES

Ghana

We began new work in Ghana, working alongside three schools filled with students eager to learn and with little or no resources and limited trained teachers. One school is constructed of wooden planks with gapping holes. Children sit five to a table sharing a book.

India

We took a team of four people from New Zealand and worked in the foothills of the Himalayas with teachers from six schools under the umbrella of one organization. These schools are in mountain villages where some children have to walk 3 hours a day to attend.

South Africa

The RATA New Zealand teachers will fly to CapeTown with a planned stop over. In CapeTown we will revisit our favourite tourist destinations and as always we will stay in the suburb of Observatory and drink the marvelous Horlicks milkshakes at OBS café.
