Projects 2010

RATA Calendar and information for 2010 projects.

July 15th - 17th - Annual Conference in Cambridge.

Planning for our teams travel to Ghana, Cape Town and India will occur, as well as hosting our annual Dinner. This weekend will also include plenty of time for RATA teachers from New Zealand to network and share ideas on how we can best teach teachers to teach in the projects they are involved with.

September 20th to October 5th - Ghana.

Approximate cost of $5500.00. Staying in the capital city of Accre and hosted by Cliff Martins Obioma- the director of the three schools we work alongside. This is our second visit and will include a retreat with RATA Teachers and all staff from the three schools for specific professional development. This will be followed by time in the classrooms modeling and mentoring. This trip will include outings to visit the Slave castles up the Cape Coast and a possible visit to a National Park. A stopover in Singapore to plan and team build on the way over is highly likely.

September 28th to October 13th - Cape Town.

Approximate cost of $4800.00. We will be continuing our work in The Ark School. This will involve modeling and mentoring. We will revisit the teachers' appraisals written in 2008. We will work on future proofing the systems and teaching methodologies we have implemented thus far. A focus will also be placed on the pre - school and supporting students psychological needs. We will aim to ensure that what we have so far implemented is ingrained in the school ethos. Most of all, we are planning a party, a graduation celebration of 5 years of partnership.

The RATA New Zealand teachers will fly to CapeTown with a planned stopover. In CapeTown we will revisit our favourite tourist destinations and as always we will stay in the suburb of Observatory and drink the marvelous Horlicks milkshakes at OBS cafe.

December 4th to December 14th - India.

Approximate cost $3800.00. We will be based up north near the city of Dehradun. The teachers of the 6 schools will come to us and we will embark on a week of professional learning in Numeracy/Literacy/Behaviour Management. The afternoons will be spent on activities to teach the teachers how to integrate the learning that they do across all learning areas. Being India, this will involve cricket, and other interactive projects. We will visit a couple of the schools in the near vicinity. We will spend a few days in Delhi, have guided tours of the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort and a rickshaw ride through the narrow streets of the old city. We can also promise amazing shopping in markets and incredible food. A stop over en route in Singapore is highly likely.

COUNTRIES

Ghana

We began new work in Ghana, working alongside three schools filled with students eager to learn and with little or no resources and limited trained teachers. One school is constructed of wooden planks with gapping holes. Children sit five to a table sharing a book.

India

We took a team of four people from New Zealand and worked in the foothills of the Himalayas with teachers from six schools under the umbrella of one organization. These schools are in mountain villages where some children have to walk 3 hours a day to attend.

South Africa

The RATA New Zealand teachers will fly to CapeTown with a planned stop over. In CapeTown we will revisit our favourite tourist destinations and as always we will stay in the suburb of Observatory and drink the marvelous Horlicks milkshakes at OBS café.
