The Ark Summary - 5 years and RATA has completed this project....
A school of 240 students based in a homeless shelter in the squatter area of Mufanali in CapeTown.
No trained teachers, there are 15 class room teachers that all share a background in destitution, drug addiction, alcoholism and are now on the process of reformation.
RATA has completed 4 visits to the Ark School. It has had a 20% increase in its end of year exam pass rates since our first visit.
The school is now receiving Government funding due to our ongoing involvement. We have written three strategic plans. These are being followed by The Ark School.
A library has been established so all children now have daily access to books.
RATA also built an adventure playground at the School so children could be active; this enhances many areas of learning.
New Zealand teacher’s story
Helping the Ark Teachers was an incredibly enjoyable and rewarding experience. I was amazed to see how hungry the Ark teachers were for useful, workable teaching techniques and strategies. It was exhausting yet extremely rewarding to have the opportunity to share with these special people some of our resources, skills and knowledge. We discovered that some of our skills, strategies and techniques we take for granted, they found profound. Working with a group of highly skilled and proficient teachers from New Zealand was empowering.
These Ark teachers have grown professionally and taken on board and implemented a lot of the professional development with huge success. This is so inspiring and certainly encourages us to return and continue their growth. Now the children they are teaching have a greater chance of having a better life purely because they are able to achieve to a higher standard than previously. The difference we make with these teachers means the difference they make to their students lives and whole future.

We began new work in Ghana, working alongside three schools filled with students eager to learn and with little or no resources and limited trained teachers. One school is constructed of wooden planks with gapping holes. Children sit five to a table sharing a book.

We took a team of four people from New Zealand and worked in the foothills of the Himalayas with teachers from six schools under the umbrella of one organization. These schools are in mountain villages where some children have to walk 3 hours a day to attend.

The RATA New Zealand teachers will fly to CapeTown with a planned stop over. In CapeTown we will revisit our favourite tourist destinations and as always we will stay in the suburb of Observatory and drink the marvelous Horlicks milkshakes at OBS café.
