Trip Info
RATA Calendar and information for 2012 projects.
June 29th to July 15th - INDIA (exact dates to be confirmed)
We will leave from Auckland and spend at two nights in Singapore to team build and prepare ourselves for the work in India. We will land in Delhi and fly into Dehradun where we will be based. This year we go in the mango season!!! and it will be hot. After spending five days at the Torchbearer Center delivering training we will try and split the team up into spending time in each of the schools we can access, to model what we have been teaching, and to mentor the teachers we have been working beside. While we are there we will visit Rishakish or Hardawar, as well as the mountain village of Missouri. It is here you can spot the Himalayas and buy amazing Indian scarves and fabrics. As always- the Taj Mahal, Delhi and the amazing food of India will be up for grabs. Just also a word of encouragement in our previous visits no RATA teacher has ever got Delhi Belly- in fact eating the local food has been a real highlight. Approximate cost will be $4000.00
September 24th to October 14 (Approx) - GHANA and TANZANIA
Approximate cost of $4800.00. We will run dual projects, one team to Ghana and another to Tanzania.
The GHANA team will leave from Auckland and fly via Johannesburg to Ghana. We will stay in Ashiaman close to the schools in the midst of a busy Ghanaian street life. It is safe and you can buy the best fruit ever from the road. We will visit local sites and the amazing Ashiaman market, where you can buy the famous Ghanian fabric and watch a few live crabs at the same time. We will try and visit a famous beach resort which is highly entertaining and we will possibly also try and get to a National Park as a team for a bit of canopy forest walking.
The TANZANIA team will go first to Nairobi in Kenya and then travel to Arusha in Tanzania to be given some local cultural training by the Joshua Foundation staff. This trip is tiring but it is very fascinating. Seeing Massai walking along the road herding their cows as you are hurtling along the road in a suspect bus is not forgettable. Here we will also hopefully see Mt Kilimanjaro- the tallest mountain in Africa. The Joshua Foundation based at En Gedi in Arusha is an amazing place and we will spend a few days there resting and learning from them. They have a range of work that they do and it is inspiring listening to what they do. We will then go to Magugu and hope that on the long bus ride, we don't collide with a giraffe. We will spend at least five days in the school, with the students on site and a couple of days as Teacher Only Days. This is a remote, hot and difficult place to work, but the people are stunning and the heart they have for the children is amazing- and you should hear them sing. We will endeavor to build in a three day safari at either Serengeti or Tarangire.

| We began new work in Ghana, working alongside three schools filled with students eager to learn and with little or no resources and limited trained teachers. One school is constructed of wooden planks with gapping holes. Children sit five to a table sharing a book. |
India |

| We took a team of four people from New Zealand and worked in the foothills of the Himalayas with teachers from six schools under the umbrella of one organization. These schools are in mountain villages where some children have to walk 3 hours a day to attend. |

| The RATA New Zealand teachers will fly to CapeTown with a planned stop over. In CapeTown we will revisit our favourite tourist destinations and as always we will stay in the suburb of Observatory and drink the marvelous Horlicks milkshakes at OBS café. |
